First time triming the motor this spring in the driveway and had some oil dripping from a hole above the lower unit. (Hole on the narrow neck closest to boat hull) trying to upload photo's. Oil was very black in color and am going to dig into it tomorrow. Any pointers, is this leftover from winterizing the carbs. As i feel if it was lower unit oil it would be clean oil.

based on the location you describe, sounds like a leaking crush washer under the vent plug -- or maybe the plug wasn't tightened down after the last service. You're right about the color, though. Dark or black is typically unburnt fuel from somewhere (and usually normal).

Gear oil will have a "distinctive" sulfur smell.

Sorry cant get a photo to load but the drip was coming out the hole on the anti-ventelation plate. Once it " drained " it seemed to be done. Thanks for the help

What does it smell like. I would guess that is just unburned fuel/oil mix that is normal.

I'm going to write it off as a leftover water/seafoam from winterization of lower unit.
