Johnson lower unit Drain/Fill gaskets?

Hi Folks,

I am wondering if my 1989 Johnson SPL48 should have those nylon gaskets on the drain and vent screws like my old vintage OMC motors use. I just changed my oil on the LU (I had the boat dealer do it last year while in for maintanence) and noticed no gaskets on the LU screws. Also, the fluid came out quite gray in color and I am concerned that water may be getting in. Anybody know whether those screws are used alone or with gaskets? Geez, I hope I don't have to do a seal job on this thing.

Thanks for the help,

Adam

The screw should have an o-ring, should have changed the o-ring.

Look closely at the recess where the drain screws go. Sometimes the nylon washers stay on the lower unit when you remove the screws.

If the threads stop before the screw head, it uses an o-ring. If the threads go all the way to the head, it takes a gasket.

c/6

Hooty
