Johnson idle problems

I have a 150hp Johnson Fast Strike. We just set it up for fishing the Great lakes. The engine runs perfect except that after trolling for a half hour or so it seems to load up and stall out. My question is,do these motors have the ability to idle for several hours, and if they do, is there a possible problem I should look for? Also, behind my air box I have a little red lever on a shrader air valve!! I bought a Clymer manual and can find no reference to this in the entire book! I am new to this BB and have already found some very valuable info, thanks in advance for any possible help.

Sounds like you need a different spark plug for trolling, Robtness. Dhadley will read this and suggest a trolling plug. In any event, keep a spare set in the boat, along with your spare prop and spare impeller.

Red sky at night. . .
JB

Hi Robtness, The red lever with the air valve is a hook-up for the OMC injection can of engine tuner, or a can of fogging oil. The lever is on the primer valve,(choke) if you turn the valve it will manually open the primer and add fuel to the motor for starting. As for you stalling problem, try trimming the motor up, Sometimes this will allow it to run a little leaner and not load up

A great motor! If everything else is OK (clean carbs, ect) Make sure you are using FRESH 87 octane fuel. I have had good luck with QL77JC4 Champions in these motors. You can also use the QL82YC.

Just for fun pull the wires off the coils (primary and secondary) and clean the posts.

Good luck!
