Hi,
I have a Johnson HD 25 that I am bringing back from the brink.
I'll need gaskets, carb kit, starter spring, etc...
Two questions:
1 Serial 72491, what year is this one?
2 Where can I find parts?
Thanks,
J

All I can tell you it's a 2.5 hp built from 1946-1950.

Thank you. I'm there. I suspect it's early because serial is only 70k+. I believe the serials went as high as 111k+.
The ignition is good via air gap spark test. The compression is 90 over 80.
The carburetor is leaking. Starter spring is broken. And, no prop. Cosmetics are good with no breaks or cracks in castings. Covers fit nice, minimal denting to fuel tank.
I did spray premix into it and it did fire for about 2 seconds. Nice and quiet.
Should be cute when I'm done.
Thanks again,
J

You might get some nice reproduction leather carb gaskets from Lloyd at aomci.org Check the free classified section or go to "ask-a-member" and see if you can get in touch with Lloyd. He has forgotten more than most know about old outboards and is very familiar with the HD-25. I'm surprised you have 90/80 psi on that HD which is pretty high. I suspect your gauge is off. 10psi difference makes me think you have a bad cylinder/piston on it. If you don't have at least 60psi or so, it will never idle correctly. If the cooling system isn't working perfectly, the fuel will boil in the lines and it won't run after it gets hot. I'd double-check the compression and if there's 10psi difference, I would think hard before wasting a lot of time on it. Laingsoutboards.com is where I buy a lot of old parts.

Not the best permanent fix, but you could heat up the end of the spring and bend it to make it work so you can test it and such. They sold a trillion of those, so a used spring shouldn't be hard to find. I might even have one if you need it. They are neat little motors and my son could crank my HD cold when he was 7 years old.
Good luck,

That serial number can't be correct. That number was built in 1928. Yours should be a six figure number.
Recoil springs right here at iboats. Pawl springs, make your own. You can get the instructions at Ask-A-Member.
