I just purchased a 89 20'checkmate with a GT200 it has very low hrs. it was stored inside summer and winter, What is the risk of using this oil injection? does it have a high failure rate? can it be updated with new pump? if it quits will alarms give me time before damage occurs? This boat has a 29 gal. tank and would be less than fun guessing on how much oil to add if I premix, done this in past with glastron, fuel gauge is never that accuate to guess by, made it too rich a few times. Thanks for info

I'll stay away from the oil injection question but I will recommend that you get rid of every drop of fuel unless you know that your fuel is reasonably fresh.

Get rid of the VRO!!! I just lost a 225 johnson that ran perfect and had perfect compression. The VRO quit working and destroyed a great engine but I'm kind of happy it happened because i replaced it with a Mercury EFI motor. My advice and i'm sure many others will agree is to get rid of the VRO. Mixing the oil is cheaper than replacing a engine

VRO sounds like a good idea... but it has some problems... You have a double diaphram pump on yours.. in theroy when the diapharm moves one way to pump fuel it sucks oil on the other side of diaphram... The idea was that if the pump failed you would loose fuel and oil... motor dies.. nothing breaks.... In real life it doesn't ALWAYS work that way... have seen several fail to pump oil but pump gas just fine...<br />I Also lost a 2.6 GT Johnson once cause the plastic pick-up tube fell off inside the oil tank... "That will **** you off"<br />Last time I checked that fuel pump costs about $225 so if it does fail you might consider switching to premix then....<br /><br />Mixing oil isn't that hard... if you have a 20 gallon tank and the gauge says 1/2.. put enough oil for ten gallons in it and then pump 10 gallons of gas... <br /><br />I highly recomend Penzoil Premium Synthic TCW-3 oil.. "Walmart 19.95 gallon" we use it in our race boats... It won't foul plugs if you mix it too strong... So in the above example if your gauge is off and you only pump 8 gallons instead of ten... you will still run just fine...<br /><br />Again always add the oil before you pump... Nothing worse then starting to poor in the oil and finding out your tank is too full to hold it...

Re: Johnson GT200 VRO?

Its a shame to remove the oil injection but it sounds to be the safe thing to do. Does anyone know the top rpm range of a 87 GT200? ran it up to 5500 rpms with a 14.25 x 21 alum prop then backed off thottle, have a 14.25 x 23 stainless to put on but not quite sure of the top range, thanks everyone
