Johnson GT200 spark issues

I have a 88 Johnson 200 Gt that started out having no spark on all cyl. I did some testing as well as my local marine mechanic and it all pointed to a bad trigger base so i replaced that and now i have spark on 4 out of 6 cyl and one is week and the other one has no spark. So replaced power pack and still no difference. I swapped coils with know working ones and plug wires and still one with out spark and one weak one. Anyone else have any ideas what could be the cause?

A low cranking speed can give false bad results, as I recall the minimum cranking speed is 200 rpm's. Make sure your battery is fully charged, make sure you have good clean connections on all the cable ends, and finally a weak starter will obviously cause a low cranking speed.

Correction, it says in the manual 300 RPM's. Sorry not trying to be a pain.... Thought it would help.

Also the only thing you have not checked is the spark plugs.... LOL You doing all the right things. Might want to go back and recheck the connections. Might be a bad one up onder the flywheel from the trigger. Also did you put a new power pack and trigger on or a old used one?

Lastly are you swapping the signal coil wire between the coils and not the physical coil? Might be a ground issue. Just some thoughts....

It cranks over good. I've tried different plugs and the trigger and the power pack are new. The coils I've swapped wires and all. Hooked up a separate ground to the coils. Still the same.

Start it and check with timing light as low rpms will cause "ghost" problems

Re: Johnson GT200 spark issues

I got spark back now. I guess when I plugged in the new power pack couple of the pins pushed partially back. But now it back fires at an idle. In probally check with a test light for timing now. Anyone know how the cyl are laid out which is #1 and what the timing should be
