I recently purchased a Clymer official shop manual for evin/johnso 48 - 235 hp year 73-90. I have a johnson GT100 that I think is a 1990. The mod.# is J100STLCEM. I want to remove the lower unit to change the impeller but I can't get the lower unit off. I followed the manual exactly. The problem is that I can't get the shift rod free of the assembly in the top half of the motor. I removed the shift rod retaining clip but I can't see how the shift rod comes out. I had the motor raised up fully one time and tried it lowered just about all the way down other times. Does the shift rod come out from the lower half? I have sucessfully changed three impellers before but they were on smaller motors and it was a long time ago.

hello<br /> did you remove the nut that attaches the cable to the lever? if not do so now. then push the lever assy towards the carb and wiggle it. you can tell when its free. yes the shift rod drops with the unit but only after the dissconect is done.

Re: Johnson GT 100 lowerunit removal

i have the same motor Johnon GT 100 1990. I have taken the LU off 2 or 3 times. after you remove the linkage on the gear shift arm and pull the clip out try pushing the linkage arm instead of puling. I almost never figured out how to get it off. I hope this helps. If you do not understand let me know.
