johnson FD-16 questions

Hello All,

I received this outboard as a "freebie" with a boat purchase with no info about it. I am wondering what was located in the holes in the lower cowling(see picture).

Holes are numbered
1. I am guessing battery cables
2. Start button
3. This one is obvious
4. ????

Does this motor use a starter solenoid?
Spark wires were cut at the armature plate, so I am not sure I have the plug wires routed to the correct cylinders, what is the correct orientation? Does this motor use a thermostat? I pulled the thermo cover and there was nothing there.

I do have a seloc manual, but I could not seem to find the answers there. I have replaced the water pump, fuel lines, carbon ring and a few other items. Compression on the top cylinder is 110, bottom cylinder is 105, so it looks like it could be worth it to fix up.

Thanks for any help

Re: johnson FD-16 questions

It's a 1962 18hp. 24:1 fuel/oil ratio, tcw3 oil.

That's good compression. I'll start and others can take over. Way to get a free engine also :)

The front coil is for cylinder #1 on top.

#3 is for the choke as labeled.
#4 is the stop button to stop the engine.
the low and high speed adjustments are there which means the carb is there which is good.
#1 and #2 I'm not sure about but if it's electric start then one will be for the wires probably and the other a possible start button. My older fd-11 electric start has a plug at the bottom for all the wire connections.

Re: johnson FD-16 questions

Thanks for the info samo_ott.

I was thinking there may have been a wire harness in the number 4 spot, because there is what looks like a mounting bracket just inside the hole.

Anyone know about the solenoid or thermostat?

Thanks

Re: johnson FD-16 questions

It has to have a solenoid somewhere whether inside the engine or in an exterior box like some of the others do. I would think that on a small engine it would be exterior.

Re: johnson FD-16 questions

Good evening!

The no. 4 hole was for the kill button on the manual start engines, wiring harness connector on the elec. starts. Looks as tho it was butchered with a file/sawsall as the hole is shiny on the edges and the '58 elec. 18 I had also fit the hole config. on the 20 hp '67 model. This should be the same. Especially since the mounting bracket for the harness is right behind the hole. External solenoid used.

Holes 1 & 2 are for dirt dobber traffic.

Also looks like the nut is missing on the mounting bracket rod or is it recessed in the hole where I can't see it?

Re: johnson FD-16 questions

Thanks again for the info guys. Anyone else have any pointers with this engine that may help me down the road? Anyone know about making this a short shaft, or how much the conversion may cost?

Thanks
