johnson, evinrude, HELP

I'm new so please understand if this is a old question. How do I tell the year a Johnson or Evinrude was made? I know it is in the serial number but what are the letters before 1980? thank you

Johnson/Evinrude have in general used model ,and not serial #'S to decern their model years. After 1980 they were incoded after the word INTRODUCES.Before that there was no real rthyme or reason to determine a specific model year other than sometime it was right in the model # Though that was not a sure bet either.What do you have and I'm sure someone here has what you need to know.
