Johnson Engine Backfiring?

Hey guys!
I have this wonderful ~1984 Johnson 35hp two stroke. It’s one of my project engines and it’s honestly in great shape, just been sitting around for a few years. However when I went to try and start it for the first time, it cranked 4 times and then let out an extremely loud pop that sent smoke flying out of the exhaust. I just rebuilt the carb and the float seemed very out of place so I’m hoping that was the problem. I’m gonna try starting it today and keep the thread updated. But if it doesn’t get any better, has anyone else had a similar experience?

You should repost this in the Johnnyrude forum. Those guys/gals will know your engine inside-out. I would guess a timing problem....

Check the flywheel key.----Make sure plug wires are on correct cylinder.
