I am the proud new owner of a Tomahawk 15 runabout with a Johnson 40 electric. model No. 40E 69R Serial number J3023451. After 2 days I have the motor running but am worried about he water flow. Can anyone tell me the year and how to check the impeller? I put it in a bucket of water but now water flow when started, might not have been deep enough.

It has to be in very deep in a barrel in order for it to pump.

The only real way to check that the impellar is working is to make sure the motor is cooling. You should be able to hold your hand on the head for a 3 count and not burn it. The only way to check the condition of the impellar is to look at it. Which if you go that far you need to replace it. It is standard replacement item on every acquired motor and the $26 provides great piece of mind.

Bucket?? I hope you ment barrel. Water should at least be above the anti-cav plate. Never run it above idle.

If you don't know its history, replace the impeller. Fairly easy and cheap. Just be carefull with the shift wiring.

Thanks I have been a boater for years but only with inboards or I\O's. Outboards are all new to me. Didn't want to make any mistakes. Been down that road before.
