Hey everyone, new here. Wondering if someone could help me out. I'm currently running a 1988 johnson 25 on a 14 foot starcraft side console. Just picked up a 1978 evinrude 35 (dual lever controls) and i want to switch motors. Am I able to do this and keep my current johnson controls.

Well the 78 35hp was crank rated, and the 88 25hp is prop rated, so the difference in power may not be as great as someone may think. The 88 has the better gearcase, with the water intakes on the side, unlike the 78's which are further forward an more prone to blockage

And the water intakes are the reason I asked. We couldn't even run the earlier ones here in FL because the weeds would block them and burn up the powerhead.

F_R I wanted to change motors to see if I gained anymore power. the 25 does alright but it struggles to plane out with 2 people. my boat is heavy for what it is due to the previous owner putting a 3/4 inch advantech floor in it. i can get this motor for 175$ with controls. guess im just trying to figure out if its worth the hassle and if the 10 more hp will make the difference i want

I would check your propeller selection first. Often, going to a lower pitch prop, particularly if the motor is lugging as it is, will help get you up on step. Much like dropping down a gear in your car's transmission will help you get up a hill. A tach reading would be helpful.
