Johnson 95 stuck manual tilt...

Hello everyone.

I seem to have a problem I can't quite solve, need some help please.

I have a Johnson 40 HP 1995 outboard that has a manual tilt.
It is now stuck in the down position.

I wanted to use the manual release to bring it to the up position so I can check on the most likely culprit, the release cable.
Everything I have read states that the manual release is a slot head screw, there isn't one on my unit.

In the current down position I cannot access let alone look at the cable, very tight space. When I use the release/lock lever tha cable does seem to move ok though.

I removed the nuts on both sides of the through pin on the bottom of the tilt so I could move the motor up but the pin won't budge at all. I have tried hammering it but don't want to really bash it in case I break something.

When I look under the tilt where the pin goes through there is what looks like a set screw to the left, if it is a set screw it has been stripped. It probably isn't a set screw but who knows, I can't figure out how this pin is stuck in there.

I have attached some pictures. I either need to know if there is even a manual release for a manual tilt or if there is anything holding the bottom through pin in place that I am overlooking.

My repair manual seems to only give details for remote tilt/trim units. Mine is a manual that just aids you in pulling the the motor out of the water.

I would really apprecaite any help on this issue.

Re: Johnson 95 stuck manual tilt...

i had to move mine to adjust the trim angle. left nut partially on to protect threads, and drove the thing out. to the nut, then use a drift pin to drive it all the way. have someone to take some pressure off it by giggling the motor. it will come out. when loose open the lever just slightly and see if the piston moves, it is under extreme pressure. to reinstall let the cylinder out a little more, and you can raise the motor to make it a little easier, i had to drive mine back in also.

you also need to go back and register again, not using your email address, good way to get spam mail..

Ok changed re-registered, thanks. Thought I could change my display name after I registered, my bad.

Gonna try getting this pin out like you suggested, thanks for the fast response.
I take it there wasn't any set screw on yours.

Yes, that is right, I can't pull the motor up (not a power T/T) just manual.

Tried bashing on that pin like suggested, wow is it stuck.

It seems to move slightly on one side but it is stuck so bad on the other it actually moves the main bracket...yikes.

I had someone lifting the motor to relieve pressure, no go.
I even tried a pneumatic chissel for the vibratory factor...no go.

I hope I can solve this without removing that pin...regardless...I will let everyone know if I solve this prblem.

If anybody knows if there is a manual release on manual tilts I would sure like to know.

Re: Johnson 95 stuck manual tilt...

i'm talking about tilt assist. not trim and tilt. i have the 93 40 which is the same motor. this is getting to be a very common problem. the cable breaks and this is the only access.
