My dad has a 90 HP Johnson VRO with power tilt/trim the number on the data plate is E335010. I am thinking it is a mid 80's model. It is frozen up. My question is, is this motor worth parting out. I would like to get a used 60-70 HP motor for the trade or money out of this 90 HP. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Johnson 90HP VRO Question

Did this motor seize up while running or is it just set up from sitting without proper storage procedures.
Problems from storage might be solved with simple external procedures. Could be a huge difference in value.

It has not be run in over 7 years. It has been sitting up in storage in humid La. weather

Re: Johnson 90HP VRO Question

Mike, Squirt some penetrating oil into the cylinders, and tilt the motor up to distribute it. Usually the rings rust to the cylinder walls. Give it a couple of days to work and see if you can gently break it lose, by hand at first, using a socket and socket wrench on the flywheel nut. Rock the flywheel back and forth. If not, put a brass drift thru the plug holes and tap gently, on all piston tops. If it loosens, give it some 2 cycle oil and rotate the flywheel by hand until it turns smooth. Now you can clean the carbs and start it up. Check for a functional waterpump.
