Boat is in Florida where I do not spend all year. In arriving Jan each year it will not start and I have to get a tech to remove 4 brass screws and clean out oil that has plugged it up. The brass screws are so tight I cannot seem to ever get them out and the slots wallow out. I can get it done again now but question is how to preclude this in future, Can I install a cutoff valve on oil line to stop oil pressure into motor when storing it when leaving? Any ideas?

Appreciate any tips.

Re: Johnson 90HP 2000 Starting Problem

my guess is that, somebody who put the engine away last time let the carburators run dry.
unplugged the fuel line and let it run till it stalls.

the vro will keep pumping oil into the floatbowls till the engine cuts out.
residual oil might also leak in the bowls.
that could be the reason why there ful of oil.

There is no oil pressure in the system without the engine running unless the vents on your remote oiltank are not working propper and the heat might presurize your tank.
still the oil pump should not leak oil into the bowls

Is it a pontoon boat?

No, it is an outboard on a 18 ft bow rider.

Re: Johnson 90HP 2000 Starting Problem

By the way, it was last run in November 08 and I did not unplug the fuel line and let it run to empty. I really did not do anything to winterize it knowing I would be back in two months.

I finally got it started after multiple tries over two days. The initial tries were the same as last year when it would not start until the 4 brass screws were taken out and the oil cleaned out with carb cleaner spray. It would try to start and last just a few seconds.

Thanks to all for the advice.

Re: Johnson 90HP 2000 Starting Problem

this is a very common in my area .
if i run across this in the spring run up.
i take a 1/8 drill bit and drill a hole in the oil tank cap.but only if rain can,t get to the tank.
during storage you can also loosen the oil cap.you can put a shut off valve in but this could put a oil recrition in the system that would give you a warring horn.
