Johnson 90 fuel leak

I've got a 1989 90HP on my Ranger. Went to start it this morning - turned over fine, no pop. Took the cover off, and saw a leak.
On the starboard side, there's a small cylinder (3 in x 1 1/2 dia) that has a red plastic lever, attached to the cylindrical part. The post holding the lever has what looks exactly like a tire valve, right down to the plunger in the middle. The gas is squirting from the base of the lever, presumably where the tire valve thing goes into the cylinder (it has a square base holding it down with 4 screws). I see no way to remove the valve.
So, 2 questions - what is it, and wll I have to replace cylinder and all, or the base plate of the valve, or is there some fix without buying parts?

Re: Johnson 90 fuel leak

what you're describing is the primer solenoid which replaced the electric choke. When you push in your key to start your motor, the primer squirts fuel directly into the carb throat to help it start easier from cold. You just need a service kit for it which can be got here, prob a worn o-ring or something is the cause of the leak but for a few dollars and ease of mind it'd be better just to take it off and exchange the old parts for new.

take your time and it is a job that can be done by yourself.

I'd also recommmend getting yourself a service manual for your motor it is an invaluable tool when diagnosing problems.

Thanks Fishfeatures, got the manual on the way - first thing I did when I got in. I'll order the part - I didn't think it would cost much, just wasn't sure what to order....
