Hi all.I have a late 70's early 80's Johnson 9.9 that quit running today.Coincidentially I was towing a stranded boater to the launch ramp when she quit running.I seem to have fuel(plugs are new and wet),I have spark on both cylinders and good compression.switched fuel tanks and lines and still no start.Has anyone familiar with this motor heard of the flywheel woodruff key shearing on these engines?I am kinda leaning to removing the flywhel and checking it thinking the timing is off.I didn't hit anything though.hoping the experts can give me some help!

Thanks,
tired of pulling recoil!

Bwargo.... If the flywheel key sheared, and you still had ignition and compression, the engine would still fire. It would however, backfire out the exhaust, yank the rope out of your hand, something of that nature.

Since you didn't mention any of the above (and you're sure you have compression and ignition), my guess would be that you have encountered contaminated fuel. If so, hooking up another tank wouldn't cure the problem as you would need to empty the contaminated fuel from the carb and lines first.... the lines you'll need to blow out, the carb can be emptied by turning the engine upside down.

The only other scenario I can think of right off, is that possibly a head gasket is failing and allowed traces of water to enter the cylinders and foul the plugs.
