Re: Johnson 9.9 or Mariner 8 hp ?

i have similar motors, a 2001 merc 8hp 2 stroke and have several, omc 9.9 and 15s and i would choose the johnson. the reason being, is my 8 hp merc doesn't put out as much power as i think it should, i think it's based on the 6hp block. what kind of boat and how is it loaded, my merc runs great, but doesn't do well with a heavy load, the 9.9's do better. lastly, omc parts seem cheaper for some reason.

I think you will find that the 1977 8 hp Mariner is a Japanese built motor. A rebadged Yamaha ??

The old Japanese made Mariners were very popular in the UK, more so I think than OMC engines but old Yamahas are not easy to obtain spares for so if you were thinking about the Mariner check the spares situation.

The Mariner may well be lighter if weight is a consideration but it is less powerful.
