Post the model number and it can be identified precisely. Should be on a plate on the transom bracket.

Or look at the links in the post headed "what year is my Johnson/Evinrude" on the Engine FAQs forum

Re: Johnson 9.5 year?

Hello. I don't see any plate on the transom bracket, but the number on the frost plug is C0597225. There is also an "M" with a border.

Does that sound correct? Thanks!

Re: Johnson 9.5 year?

Shaggy, I looked on your post there and your motor is very similar. The guy I bought this one from said it was early 70's, likely a 73. From what I understand these motors were produced from around 1964-1973 or something, and they are all mechanically identical with only minor cosmetic changes.
Were you able to identify the year from the serial number on the frost plug? I am quite interested to find out the exact year and model # of this motor.

I'll just assume it's a 68/69 going by what was said in my post. Not sure if the number on the frost plug will be of any help??? I'll go over mine when it warms up some. It was snowing this morning again!!!

The one thing I noticed is that yours says 9 1/2 on the back of the motor cover, and mine says 9.5 . I noticed that on pics of the "newer" (70's) ones they have the 9.5.

Does nobody have any idea how to decipher the code, or know the year by the appearance of the motor? :)

Im afraid I cant break the code for you but since I have a motor close to the ones here I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me the year of mine, Model MQ-11C, Serial #J2558004. The guy I bought mine from said he thought it was a '68, however it's all white and say's 9 1/2 on the cowling. It looks alot like the rest but I was just wondering. Thanks, Dean

Re: Johnson 9.5 year?

I can see in your photograph that the plate has been removed from the port side transom bracket but that the holes where the two screws were are still visible. The serial number that you gave is either missing a number or goes with a Evinrude powerhead, not a Johnson.

Re: Johnson 9.5 year?

The engine serial number is probably late 1969 or 1970 Evinrude. The Evinrude model numbers are here: http://web.archive.org/web/20011223004029/www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/evmodyr/EHP9.html

Since the parts are pretty much the same after 1968, I would use the 1973 parts catalog. A dealer can tell you the correct year from the serial number.

Use the on-line store parts catalog so that you can get the most recent superseding part numbers when applicable. http://shop.evinrude.com/

Re: Johnson 9.5 year?

Thanks for the info. Very odd indeed... Seems as if I have a johnson that has an evinrude engine, or maybe an evinrude that has a johnson cover??
Oh well, as you said, the parts are the same so it shouldn't be too bad. :)
Runs good anyway!

Cheers.
