Ok I am at wits end because I dont want to pay money to someone to install this thing back on. I took off the tiller arm so I could get to the gas input to change the fuel line. With the arm in place I couldnt get a good angle to install a new fuel line there. So I took it off and now I can get it installed back on correctly. The mechanism is a simple procedure so I thought it wouldnt be hard to put back on. Just a gear (the end of the tiller handle) that slots into another tube gear. If you have seen it, you know what I am talking about. This is held together by 3 bolts that screw from the inside of the motor and grab the arm. I cannot get this thing back on there correctly for some reason. The gears sometimes seem to work right with the throttle and sometimes not, sometimes it feels like they jam up. Sometimes when you twist it either way it doesnt stop where it is supposed to. Used to it would stop at a certain point either giving it throttle, or backing off the throttle. Basically I was just trying to find someone with experience putting a tiller arm back on a johnson motor and to tell me what I am doing wrong, or how you did it.

thanks

one bump before I have to take it somewhere. Bummer because the going rate is about $90 per hour here for labor and it stinks I will have to pay $90 plus tax to just have the tiller arm put back on.

thanks

Installing that throttle tiller handle is just about impossible to describe. You won't find the procedure in the OMC service manual either. The gears must align up in an exact manner. I'd suggest that you remove it again and study that alignment.

If I come across anything that might be of help, I'll get back to you. Since you've already removed it once, you have nothing to lose, and I'd suspect that the repair shop you speak of has never encountered that problem either.

I'm with Joe on this one. It took several tries before I had an "aha" moment. I could probably do it again w/o any trouble if I had one in front of me. Describing it . . . well I'm not sure. If you had a picture or two of the parts it might trigger a way to describe it though.

Re: Johnson 9.5 - reinstalling tiller arm

I will take pics tonight. Its a simple mechanism. 2 gears that work together, but on the end of the tiller handle with the gear, the gear is only about 60% gear, and then its just round the other little bit. I tried and tried last night and gave up. I have done everything else myself on this motor (seals, carb kit, impeller, etc...) I just cant figure this out. I will take some pictures tonight and let you guys take a look and see if yall can help me out.

when i tried to do it, the results were sometimes it would pull the throttle, but not release. Sometimes it wouldnt budge either way. Sometimes it would work both ways but there was just too much play in between full throttle and stop.

it was just not installed on the gears like it should be and it was killin me.

thanks the response and I will post some pics.

The iboats people have helped me with this one. Heres what I did.
1. manualy move the linkage to the start point.
2. turn the tiller handle to the start point.
reinstall, But its a pain to get the screw back into the spring loaded handle. But this work for me.

I hope this helps.

P.S. When I took my weedeater in for repair, and he told me $90 an hour for labor. I bought a new one. $69:D

Re: Johnson 9.5 - reinstalling tiller arm

What should the teeth look like on the linkage when the handle is in the start position? should it be right on the edge of the teeth? I need to make sure my handle is installed on the correct spot. Actually at this point, I dont care...I would settle to remake marks, but I still would like to know where the teeth on the gears should be when the handle is in the start position.

thanks

Re: Johnson 9.5 - reinstalling tiller arm

i got it put back on finally. I took the advice and had it all set on slow and the linkage pulled to slow. Its working fine but I have my handle on backwards so I will need to change that. That shouldnt be a problem though.

thanks for the help
