I'm reviving a 1968 9.5 for my 14' tinny. I've been told that a certain amount of powerhead movement is expected in these motors, but how much? Is there a certain way i should move and measure to see if it's OK? My manual is in the mail.

the powerhead is mounted with rubber motor mounts and can be jiggled around inside of the housing.

It should have a rubbery movement, but it should NOT flop around loose in there. If you can grab hold of the flywheel and move the whole powerhead fore and aft, the upper front rubber mount is broken. VERY common and the mounts are obsolete and a real challenge to replace.

Yes, they are a challenge to replace. I've done a few of them. If you do happen to tear it down to replace them, I would suggest replacing the rubber boot, down near the bottom. If this fails, then your motor won't run properly. These are good motors and quite reliable, but this seems to be the only major issue with them. Seaway Marine, up in Seattle Wa. would likely be of help to you, for parts.

Good Luck.

I can definitely move it fore and aft. The strange thing is that it stays right where it belongs when running. Hopefully my manual from Ken Cook gets here soon and has what I need to tear it down.
