Hey all, been lurking but now it's time to play stupid newbie questions! Just acquired a Johnson 9.5 horse model number 9R73B. From what I've seen this is a 1973? Also been stored upright for the past 5 years, what parts seals need to be replaced before attempted start up?
Thanks for the help

Usually it would need some magneto work and to have the carburetor cleaned.... but you may be lucky. Check the spark... if you have spark, give it a shot. If it runs but a problem exists, we can go from there.

I agree with above. Spray some oil in the plug holes first though. Give it a go and you might be pleasantly surprised. A new impeller should be on your to do list. Best of luck. Rick.

change the water impeller for sure. bleed any gas that may have been left in the fuel line, this is a 2 stroke motor so the gas line it has inside the motor gets clogged with oil if any gas was left in there, you can take it off and run a clean wire in it to do this. make sure to use fresh gas, nothing hurts the chances of starting it more then old gas. clean the dirt out of the gas tank before you put the fresh gas in. clean the carburator and when you take it off change the gaskets. change the lower unit oil make sure the gears are all greased and look good. and as always buy starting fluid to give it a little boost. hope you find these tips helpful.

+1 on clean tank, fresh fuel AND purge the fuel line to get rid of old fuel inside.

Good luck!

DO NOT use starting fluid!!!! These motors are 2 strokes requiring oil in the fuel.No oil=wrecked motor.Use premixed fuel from a spray can.

i didnt say dump a whole can of spray in and try to start it but if you are having significant trouble getting it started the first time after ten years of it sitting there, having a 5 dollar can of starting spray to give it 1 or 2 jet sprays into the breather could help give it a boost and will not damage the motor. if you run the motor on only starting spray then you might blow a gasket but this is the same for 4 strokes or car engines. its called starting spray for a reason, its not ment to run the motor for a significant amount of time.

have your tank of pre mixed fresh gas hooked up so that once you get it going its running on the correct mixture and the oil will be instantly lubing it up.

plus most mechanics will advise you it is always a bad idea to pour gas into the carb

Just thought I'd throw this out, One of the best Outboard tech's I have ever known (he passed away last year) introduced me to a product called Tri-flow spray lubricant, Just spray it in the cylinder or carb etc. it is a great lubricant but in addition it is very flammable, maybe even more so than starting fluid or carb cleaner. I use to use pre-mix in the cylinders on problem motors or just trying to bring a oldie to life, Now I only use this product it is a bit pricy but I have found nothing that works as well.
