Johnson 8hp Outboard. What year/model?

Hello,<br /><br />I have a Johnson 8hp outboard, (2 stroke, 2 cyl), but not sure of year and model. The unit is WHITE and I did find the number B8444842 on a small plate in the engine compartment. I was not able to locate any model type numbers in the transom bracket area. This appears to be a short shaft model. Also, there's a small decal on the engine cover that reads "TIDERUNNER". Not sure what that means, but it sounds good.<br /><br />Any help to identify this motor would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That number don't compute with any Johnson crazee.....look on the engine block for a large welch plug. Model and Serial number should be there.

OK Thanks for the reply. All the great info in other postings should also help in tracking down the elusive J8???? number.
