While out fishing this morning my battery would only charge to 14 volts(based on digital gauge) then drop to as low as 12.6 then back up towards 13 then down then back up , you get the picture. New stator, rectifier tests goof. Good battery have lost a cell and wont hold a charge? I probably over charged it in the past with the unregulated system so new battery may be in order along with coverting to regualted system

Re: johnson 88 battery charging issue

Had batt tested at Wal Mart (Ever Start from Wal mart) and ittested good. went across the street and Aut Zone got the same, good battery. So I will go over connections and see how it test stator battery charge side to see if its putting out proper voltages and go from there.

Re: johnson 88 battery charging issue

14 volts is normal charging voltage with the engine reved a bit. 12.6 is static battery voltage. Voltage will vary in between those numbers depending on engine revs and what you have turned on at the time you took the readings. Both numbers are normal.

Re: johnson 88 battery charging issue

Silvertip I agree those would be normal had I been running accessories and it had been a REGULATED charging system. But the 88 special is an unregulated charging system, with nothing running the voltage will get over 15 if your not careful. So something is not normal but I appreciate the feedback.
