Johnson 86 Water Pump Kit question

Hi,

I've purchased the water pump replacement kit:

But I can figure out what the seal with the red arrow is for. The kit doesn't come with any instructions. I've taken apart the old pump and it didn't seem to have this seal, unless it was melted between the housing and impeller. Is that where it goes?

The kit covers a quite a large number of years. there may have been some changes in that time.

Find the parts diagrams and lists specific to your model eg HERE and HERE and identify all the relevant parts
