johnson 70hp shift problem

I'm having trouble getting the shift linkage adjusted on an early 80s 70hp johnson. When I screw the length adjuster forward enough to shift into forward it just ginds in reverse, and if I adjust it far enough to engage reverse it won't engage forward. Anybody know what I need to do?

Have you had the lower unit off and possibly turned the shift rod out of adjustment..... which is critical? What is the model number of that engine?

hey i just had my lower drive of and have this same problem...goes in foward and grinds in reverse .....heres my numbers 70673d j0002147
