Johnson 7.5hp Tell Tale

I have replaced thermostat, impeller and water tube grommet on my 1982 Johnson 7.5. It starts and runs fine now but the flow from the tell tale (pee) varies from a spluttery trickle to a strong jet. I can't work out why. It is running at correct temperature - I am able to place finger on cylinder head for a few seconds.
Any views?

run a wire or weedeater line up your tale tell hose. could be debris in there.
