Johnson 6HP runs only with choke?

Hi, great forum! Tried searching but didn't get any specific info.

Have a '92 Johnson J6RENM that runs only with the choke out a little, all speeds. Working the primer bulb doesn't seem to make any difference.

Will look at carb and fuel pump but is there anything specific I could be looking for? TIA.:)

I think your on the right track with the carb. Closing the choke reduces air and thereby increasing the richness of the fuel/air mix. Sounds like a good cleaning and kit is in order. Best of luck. Rick.

The specific culprit is the high speed jet in the carburetor. It is precision sized to correctly meter the fuel. If there is even a hint of varnish or other crud in it, that reduces the size and makes it run lean---requiring choking. Make sure it is absolutely clean. And don't be jamming wires and drills and stuff through it either.

I have a 1984 6hp Johnson. How big a job to change the impeller on this motor. I had to order the impeller and am waiting for its delivery. I have to replace the pull cord also. Those are hard to find. Can I just use a strong nylon cord? Would appreciate any help. This is my first motor but am somewhat mechanically inclined.

Terry Keeley: I've never used brake cleaner on a carb. It is good stuff though. I would use carb. cleaner just because I know it works. Rick.

hamar507: Please start your own thread.

Yep, get the gunge out of the carb and it will most likely run great again. Great little motors they are.

it is considered bad manners to hijack a thread. You need to start your own. especially since it is a completely different subject.

Carb cleaner it is then, makes sense, might be some plastic/rubber parts hurt with the brakeclean.

I'll post the results...

Thanks for the help!

Running only with a choke can mean you have an air leak too. Bad gasket, loose hose, etc.

My buddy had the boat out last weekend and said he got it running perfectly just by adjusting the "high speed needle" a little richer, didn't know that it even had one, thought it only had a jet.

Anyway that's fixed it apparently, thanks for all the suggestions...
