Hi,

Can anyone help me. I have a Johnson 69 85Hp that slips out of gear, into neutral
under load.

Recently I replaced the lower gearcase complete with a second hand and it had some
leaks. I have fixed all the leaks and changed the oil several times.

The reverse and Neutral work fine, it just slips out at around 4K rpm

Hi Bapof,

If your gearcase one of the old "selectric" gearcases?

if it is electric ,and you unplug both wires, can the prop spin freely (motor not started)???

if so, then you probably have a selectric.. (as opposed to hydroelectric which will default to forwards when no power.)

Anyway.. if its a selectric.. then you probably have a worn electric clutch.. I had the same problem, for me, the answer was simple, strip the gearcase and swap the forward and reverse clutches, they are the same and should be easy to swap..

Since noone goes WOT in reverse, it shouldn't be a problem for reverse..

I did that on mine and it fixed the prob.

Its a bit fiddly to do, but not that hard, would have been easier for me if i had had a manual, but I managed without it.

something to look into anyway..

rgds

Frank

Re: Johnson 69 85Hp slips out of gear under load

The motor has a hydraulically shifted gearcase that is normally in forward gear and needs hydraulic pressure for neutral and reverse. As long as there is no voltage on the green shift wire (neutral), there may be a buildup of pressure due to the wrong gear oii. Use only the OMC Type C oil which is "thinner" than many gear oils.

The clutch dog and forward gear could also be worn enough to start jumping. Does it jump then slam back into gear or stay in neutral?

The Gear case is definitely Hydro electric. And I am pretty sure it slips into Neutral - the engine revs to 5.5K suddenly and I loose all forward drive.

I tried disconnecting the wires to the solenoids and it did exacltly the same thing, ie starting locked in forward but slipping out under load.

I am using "OMC Premium Blend Gearcase oil" but it looked a dirty-greenish colour (not milky) when I drained it last. (after maybe 10 hours use).

Could this problem be a blocked/dirty oil filter?
