Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and in the uk, I have a 60hp Johnson with a model number of BJ60TLEDR. This is on my first boat and have a question with the primer lever, the position it's in now won't let me start the engine, I was told the lever needs to be rotated 180 degrees to start. I do this and it starts and runs with fast idle lever set half way but when I turn the lever back into original position the engine dies, reading the other posts sort of makes sense, however they all state the lever should be in line with the solenoid and from the photo it looks like mine is not, can anyone help with the correct start up procedure. Thanks Andy

Oh and I can hear the solenoid clicking I think, when I pump the key in the ignition.

With the lever in that position, it is for manual operation. If you want to use the choke switch, rotate the lever 180 degrees, back over the solenoid.
You can disconnect the fuel lines from the choke solenoid to the carbs and activate the choke switch and fuel should come out of fuel lines going to the carbs.
If the engine will not run with the choke in the auto position, I wound if your carbs might need to be cleaned.

Re: Johnson 60hp

Oh, I forgot, welcome to the forum.

Thanks, :)

Ok I think I am confused, which isn't hard:embarassed:

The position it is now is for manual? However it won't start, which could be down to my inexperience, but if I rotate it 180 degrees and give it a bit of fast idle, it starts first time, I'm a bit fussy and want everything working like it is supposed to. Should it start with the lever in its current position, and me pumping the key?

Sorry for asking such basic questions

Did you pull a choke fuel line from one of the carbs and see if it pumps fuel when you push the key in to choke it?
Make sure to squeeze the primer bulb till firm before the test.
