I have a 1990 Johnson 60hp i think elsm model. I am having trouble with the starter. It is acting as if the battery is dead, just barely turning the motor over. I have read all the other posts about this and ran jumper cables from the battery directly to the starter. - didn't help, charged battery over night. Then took all the plugs out and it was strong for just a few seconds then rapidly dieing. I Tried 3 different batteries. I took the starter off and took it apart and inspecting for any broken magnet pieces and it all looked normal. I also took the head off and looked at the cylinders and there didn't apear to be any damaga. I don't know where to go from here any ideas?

Re: Johnson 60hp starter problem

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: Johnson 60hp starter problem

Sounds like you have a broke starter, shubobo, but don't give up yet.

When you did the jumper test, did you jump both the + and - poles to the starter, or, like most folks, just the +?

Get a multimeter and go to the Engine FAQs. Do "Outboard won't start" starter troubleshooting.

Let us know what you found there.

Re: Johnson 60hp starter problem

I used both the + and - ends. I tried it every way I could think of, just trying to make something work. I will check out the engine faqs and see what I can find. The started just didn't look bad to me, although im no mechanic, but i have seen a broken starter before. Any other suggestions would be helpful thanks.

If your starter really is bad you can get it overhauled by an auto starter repair shop. Usually under $100.

Re: Johnson 60hp starter problem

Ok, I got a volt meter and checked my battery, it was 12.4 v and then checked at the solenoid which had 12.4 volts also. I then checked the volts at the starter while I was starting it and it read 7.4. Is there anyhing else I can check before I take my start off to a rebuild store??

Re: Johnson 60hp starter problem

could be bad cable between solenoid, and starter, you have 12.4 at the solenoid, but only 7 at the starter.

Re: Johnson 60hp starter problem

But I by passed the solenoid, I took jumper cables and connected to the hot on the starter and where they ground wire bolts to the block, then the other end to the battery?

Re: Johnson 60hp starter problem

Does "and so forth" include the battery ground cable that bolts to the engine block?
