I have a 60hp Johnson 3 cylinders (approx. '70s), I replaced distributor, rotor, plugs, and I still have an intermittent spark at idle. Motor was sitting for 3 years in garage before I started it, I cleaned carbs, done most of maintenance before starting a motor for such a long time. Could that be the coil ? It doesn't matter where I test, # 2 or # 3 has intermittent spark. Thanks for any advise. Val

Re: Johnson 60hp spark problems

hey valv,

i'm a little confused, you say you have an intermittant spark at idle.. so the engine is running right? how is it running WOT? when you said no matter what you had int spark at #2 & #3 did you mean #1 also or just 2 and 3? if it is all three cylinders and you are checking them when the engine is running then it is normal to have intermitant spark. if it is just cyl 2 & 3 then that it is a whole different story. i cannot help if that is the case, however, if you give answers to the questions i have raised, i feel certain someone will be able to give you advice on how to correct the situation.

hope i could help

mason

Re: Johnson 60hp spark problems

Thirdm, I found problem, replaced distributor "cap" and rotor with new ones (not used as I did before). Motor had spark and starts, but instead of continuous spark on cylinders 2 and 3 it was intermittent ( I mean spark-spark-spark-nothing-spark-spark-nothing etc) cyl. # 1 was a good continuous spark. I mention idle since it's tougher to check it WOT, I use a strobo light and connect terminal to all cyls. Anyway I got the bugger figured it out, now it runs fine (just have to tune up idle mix on carbs).

Thank you very much, I am new to this forum and I find it very helpful, now it's in my Favorites bookmark.

Val
