I have a Johnson 60 horsepower 2-stroke engine roughly 1975 struggling to start just splutters and cuts out or revs high and cuts out. The red manual primer lever inside is loose and sometimes leaks fuel if pulled out slightly. Been sitting for 12 months but apparently was running then however I don't know whether to scrap it and get a newer four stroke engine or spend on trying to fix it. Fuel delivery is ok and it's had the carbs cleaned last year but not ran since.
Any advice would be great. Are parts hard to come by?

Gee, bypass the primer valve, after the motor starts (pinch the fuel line with a vice grip) and see if that helps.

A leaking primer would allow raw fuel into the intake manifold. It is good for cold start, but after that it would cause flooding.

Hi, thanks for the response. Ill try this, it won't stay running long though. A few seconds at best.

No red primer valve on 1975 models.----Need pictures and model #.-----Perhaps a newer powerhead ( 1985 ) was installed on a 75 model

Welcome to iboats
There was no 60hp in the mid 70s. There was a 3 cylinder 60hp in 1970, and 71. In 1980, a 2 cylinder 60hp, was introduced.

Motors were NOT white in 1975.----Clearly is a newer ( 1988 3 cylinder ? ) motor.----No such thing as a " temperamental " motor if it is in good condition.----Picture of cowling may help identify.

Possible

Primary Location
    • Transom Bracket Plate/Sticker: Look on the left or right side of the main mounting bracket assembly. Older motors use a small metal plate, while newer models use a decal sticker.
    • Duplicate Tag: Some models also have a secondary secondary tag or stamp located on the powerhead or midsection swivel area. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Backup Location (If Tag is Missing)
    • Freeze Plug (Core Plug): If the external plate or sticker is missing or faded, look under the engine cowl on the powerhead block for a small, round, silver-colored metal core plug (frost plug). The identification numbers are often stamped directly into this plug. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
