I was told I had compression of 125 in my top two cylinders and 95 in the lower. The motor is a 97 with very few hours. What would cause this and is there anything else I can check before the guy said I need to spend $1500 to have it fixed.

Re: Johnson 60 Compression Problem

Howdy, Lonecow. Most of the things that could cause your low compression in the bottom cylinder are bad, and expensive to fix. That's the bad news.

The good news is that there are at least a couple of possible causes that are fairly easy and inexpensive to fix.
Gummed/stuck ring(s)can be freed up with with a quality decarbonizing spray. Ask for it at your marine dealer and follow the directions. A blown head gasket is a bit more trouble and expense, but a lot quicker and cheaper than a powerhead overhaul.

Good Luck.
JB
