I have a mid 70's Johnson 55hp. Compression is 110lbs on both cylinders, new fuel pump rebuilt carbs, and I know it's getting fuel, and getting good spark on both cylinders, so does anyone have a clue why it won't run

Will the spark jump a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester ?? Checking spark with a spark plug tells you nothing. Also check the flywheel key.

Has it ran in the past and if so what happened when it stopped running?

I had problems starting/running my 77 Johnny 55 and it would run then die intermittently. ended up fixing it with a new power pack.

Have another look at post #2-check the flywheel key. If it breaks, the flywheel will be out of time and it won't run.

Out of time really is about all that can be left if u got fire, combustion and fuel. Getting her back into time might be a bit out of my league

If the flywheel key sheared the motor will not be timed properly.-------Easy to check by removing the sparkplugs.----Turn flywheel till top piston stops moving up in the cylinder.--------Then look where the timing pointer is.

Pointer should be at TDC mark on flywheel.

no I'm not its not my boat its my friends 80 yr old fathers boat, we cleaned the carbs, replaced the water pump, replaced the spark plugs, and rebuilt the fuel pump for him, it ran on the hose for about 2 minutes and died. now it turns over hard if that makes any since, it will turn over and kind of lunge and cough out smoke, I am going to take the plugs out and check the timing marks

Yes that is a lot, that means the flywheel has moved a lot. Take the nut off you might be able to see how far it has moved either way time to pull the flywheel.

The key may not be a standard woodruff key from a bin at the hardware store !----Make sure you get one from a Johnson / Evinrude shop !-The key merely locates the flywheel it is driven by the locking tapers.
