I have found an old 2 cyl 50hp Johnson that I plan on looking at more closely in the next couple of days. I am not sure of the year yet, it has a green trunk and foot with a white cowling.

My question is-- do I need to look for anything specific before trying to crank it? It has not been started in several years and needs a new home. I plan to get a fresh tank of gas and a very hot battery and see what happens.

Do these motors have any inherent problems I need to look for?

Thanks in advance.

merc - You will get a lot more info if you can come up with the model number. That will give the guys the year. KNowing the year is a must as the proper fuel mix depends on it.

What do you know of it's history? I would start by pulling the plugs, squirting some oil into the cylinders and turning it over by hand. Post back & we will help you get it running.
