I have a neighbor that has a 1990(?) Johnson 50 HP outboard that doesn't appear to be getting spark. I pulled the plugs and grounded them and didn't get any spark at all. He called the local Marine dealer and at first they told him the power pack, then they told him on another call, this motor doesn't have a power pack and that it would most likely be the coil. From what I can tell, there is indeed no power pack and instead it has a double coil. Dealership was fairly confident it would be the coil.

Is it possible to test these coils, or is that the likely culprit and just replace it? I will say this boat has sat for several years, but everything seems to look ok, and it seems to be getting gas.

FWI, the engine model # is J50TLEOD, I also have the serial #G 03750683, but how do I determine the year for certain? I thought he said it used to have a different motor on this boat and the boat is a 1990....

Thanks for any help getting this baby waking this baby back up!

Re: Johnson 50 No Spark

It is a 1995 and yes it does have a power pack it is Item # 20 and Item # 72 is the double coil.

I suggest you start on page 38 of the CDI troubleshooting guide in my sig and follow the steps for no spark. Do not skip over any of the steps it will help you isolate the problem. Your issue could be as simple as the black and yellow stop wire is grounding out. Good Luck.

I guess I'll have to go take another look at that motor, because I sure didn't see a power pack on it....hmmm!!

Then not to sound argumentative, but how do you know it is indeed a 1995? The main reason I ask is because the other night he was adimant the motor came on the boat in 1990, even though he had told me a while back his dad had had a bigger motor on it at one point. I just know he'll argue with me, so I need to know how to show him.

I'll also try to get that page loaded and go through your steps, thanks!!

I have a similar issue with a much older - 1973 Johnson 50 HP - Started 2 days ago then quit. Thought it was a carb issue but after trying everything there decided to test for spark this morning - nothing. After some quick checks sensor and charge coil both seem to have proper resistance readings but the rectifier has a corroded red lead. I didn't think the rectifier could stop spark to the plugs. I am stumped at this moment. Any ideas?

It's not nice to hi-jack a thread. Read the rules at the top of the forum and start your own.
