I have a neighbor that has a 1990(?) Johnson 50 HP outboard that doesn't appear to be getting spark. I pulled the plugs and grounded them and didn't get any spark at all. He called the local Marine dealer and at first they told him the power pack, then they told him on another call, this motor doesn't have a power pack and that it would most likely be the coil. From what I can tell, there is indeed no power pack and instead it has a double coil. Dealership was fairly confident it would be the coil.
Is it possible to test these coils, or is that the likely culprit and just replace it? I will say this boat has sat for several years, but everything seems to look ok, and it seems to be getting gas.
FWI, the engine model # is J50TLEOD, I also have the serial #G 03750683, but how do I determine the year for certain? I thought he said it used to have a different motor on this boat and the boat is a 1990....
Thanks for any help getting this baby waking this baby back up!
