I purchased the above motor a few years ago and I am just now getting to fixing it up. No idea of the history, everything looks new and undamaged, original plugs, turns over OK etc. I am looking for parts such as carb rebuild, water pump, electrical etc. The parts listings I find do not list this motor. According to the tables it is a 1994 motor. The model # is J4RDHERE, serial # B09030858. The tables translate (if I read correctly) to Johnson 4HP, Rope start Deluxe, 1994 model. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Re: Johnson 4HP Deluxe parts

OK, taking the easiest first, I put new plugs in the motor and made sure I had fresh gas. It tried to start on the second or third pull. I rigged up a water tank and tried again. It started on the first pull. I went thru the gears, everything including the tell tale worked fine. It sounded like it was running fine. After about 2 minutes it died. It turns over fine but will not restart. The cylinder head was not at all hot to the touch when it quit so I am pretty sure it did not overheat. The plugs are alomost dry with only a faint smell of fuel. I suspect the carb is gummed up but I would like more expert opinion or some way to verify that. Also, the manual says not to pull a spark plug and short it to a ground to see if I have spark. How do you test for spark?

you can use some fuel mix in a spray bottle and spray it directly into the carb throat to start and maintain it running to verify carb..spark is checked with an open air gap spark tester set at 7/16" ..tester can be found at most auto parts places for $10 or less...the open air gap is important, not the light or neon tester

i would just clean the carb, without rebuilding.take out all parts, clean and put back.
slow speed needle 1.5 turn out

consider to change water pump impeler only, but first put engin in deep water bucket and run

Re: Johnson 4HP Deluxe parts

Thanks to all who helped, here is the latest update. No spark with the new tester ($8.00 at auto parts store). Followed the diagnostic in the manual as to disconnecting the kill switch. Now I had a good spark. So, I disconnected the ground wire for the kill switch and everything ran fine. Pump seems to be OK. I put the motor on my fishing boat for a troller and put my tools away. I don't figure a kill switch is imperative for a 4 HP motor. Looks like it might be the wrong switch for that motor. The one on the motor requires the little plunger to be depressed to make it work, when the plunger is out, no go. But the current clip seems to work just the opposite. Anyway, I may mess with that some other day. Thanks again for the invaluable help.
