1989 Johnson 48 SPL outboard

Hey guys. Great forum here. I am doing my first outboard water pump. I have a solid vehicle repair history, but outboards are still fairly new to me. Anyway, I am going to do the water pump this wknd. I have been searching high and low and can't find a guide on how to do this online. I know I have to remove the 4 bolts on the lower unit, the bolt in the trim tab, and the shift linkage. My question is where is the shift linkage for removal? Under the powerhead? Can you be specific on exactly where it is and how to get at it? Also, I have heard that guys put it back together and the gears are now misaligned. How do I prevent this from happening? Any other things to watch out for?

Anyone done a similar engine even? The 50 is identical, the 40 is close I think and the 70's and similar are very close. Anyone maybe give me a clue on any of those that may help.......

Take a look at the site below, you should see where to disconnect shift linkage.
The only thing that might cause alignment problems is getting the driveshaft back into the crankshaft. Before you disconnect the shift linkage put the lower unit in forward, when you go to put the lower unit back on you can rotate the prop to align the splines into the crankshaft.http://www.ishopmarine.com/ishop/js...nown&isFrPG=false&forItemCode=&pCode=C0144327

Thanks Admiral. However, just to make certain, I am going to unbolt part #331109? Then it will drop?

Also, I should use wheel bearing grease on the impeller right?

Look towards the top of the page, 332510 is the shift rod going down to the lower unit. 332486 is the screw that holds it in the bracket, remove 332486 and the shift rod should disengage.
Yes, you can lightly coat the housing where the impeller contacts the housing with grease.
