I am looking at a boat to purchase (my first boat) Saturday. The add states it has a 48HP Johnson and I know nothing about these motors. What should I look for during my inspection and test run? Are these engines known for any particular problems? Is it a good reliable engine? The boat is a 16? Sea Ark and will be used primarily for duck hunting, so an engine which will be reliable in cold weather is a must.

I do have a fairly extensive mechanical background, so I feel confident I should be able to maintain it with no problem. But I would like some advice on not buying a problem from the start. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Re: Johnson 48

Do a compression test on it first, look for consistancy in the numbers. they should be within 10% (or so) of each other. If you are able to put it in the water, that's the best test of all. Make sure it's shifting ok and has a good stream of water coming out the pee hole. Being a mechanic, you have an ace in the hole. They're good motors for everyday use. There's a bunch of 'em out there and running great. good luck!

Re: Johnson 48

Well I bought the boat subject to a satisfactory test run. 1998 SeaArk with center console, live well, duck blind and 48SPL. The owner assures me that the engine will perform well. Said he had a mechanic test and tune just prior to putting up for sale, I hope so. The only problem I could find is the steering is tight. To diagnose I unhooked the steering linkage and the motor swings free. Looking on this site, I found it?s probably the tilt tube, which seems reasonable as the boat has not been used for several years. Always said I would never own a boat, but duck hunting has lead me to boat ownership.
