My 1990 Johnson model J40ELESR runs well at high throttle but refuses to idle unless it is choked. Both carbs have been rebuilt and ultrasonically cleaned as well as manually cleaned by removing core plugs and cleaning the low speed fuel passages. Squirting fuel into the venturies restores operation at low speeds just like choking does. The spark is very strong for both cylinders. I now wonder if the VRO pump is not supplying sufficient fuel at low RPM or perhaps the pulse limiter is clogged. Do you have any ideas for me to try next? Also since I removed the VRO oil supply system many years ago, would it make sense and is it possible to convert to the standard non-VRO fuel pump?
