I have a 1995 40 hp Johnson outboard. Last fall the engine sounded very bad. They said the top cylinder did not get any oil and therefore it needed a new head. I took the head off and it doesn't look bad. There is a little scorring but not much. I did a compression test and it read 120 in both cylinders. Now I want to torque the head back down but am not sure what the torque should be. Is it 20 lbs? The I am going to run it in the lake.
Also now I am concerned that the oil injection may fail or clog again. Is it ok to mix the oil in the gas (50:1) and still run with the oil injector running also?

Thanks for your help in advance.

lakelandstamp@netscape.net :)

lakeland,

Whoever told you that the oil pump caused your top cylinder to score is a blockhead. The oil pump mixes the fuel/oil before it reaches the carburetors, it CANNOT discriminate between cylinders.

Your problem is with the carburetor that feeds that cylinder. Unles you address that carb., it's going to only get worse.
