Just bought a Johnson 4.0 Deluxe that was intended for use on my inflatable. However, after a test run I think I will put it on my sailboat and use the Yamaha 4 (currently on the sailboat) for the inflatable.
The Johnson seems to have more guts and is definitly quieter than the Yamaha. (perhaps because it is a twin?
Any comments to this?
My questions are What is the difference between a Johnson 4 and a 4 Deluxe?
What year would it be?
The model # is cj4rdhce
Than you in advance.
Great site!!!

Howdy, Macaroo.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The model number is a bit confusing to me, but I think you have a 1989 engine.

I can only speculate, but it may be that the Deluxe has a gearshift.

Really great little engine. One of the best small outboards ever made. . .by anyone.

Re: Johnson 4.0 Deluxe

Macaroo,
I also just got a 1990 johnson 4 h.p. with a sail boat recently. I agree with JB the delux means it has a shift, but my engine has a shift with only foward and neutral . For reverse you have to spin the engine around and have it in foward. Its a little bit to get used to but I think it is well worth it considering how smooth and steady the engine runs. I also have a Nissan 5 that runs well but because of the single cylinder it has a lot of vibration, enough to put my hand a sleep while holding the tiller. The other advantage is the johnson came with a 6 gal. remote tank, it should run a long time on a fill up.
Does your 4 johnson have a lot of plastic parts?
Mine has a upper and lower plastic cowl, and also a plastic shroud around the upper leg.
Good luck with your engine,
Bill

Re: Johnson 4.0 Deluxe

If you picture taking a same-year 6HP JohnnyRude, removing the powerhead, and grafting on a 4HP powerhead instead you've pretty much got a 4 Deluxe.

The big functional difference between the 4 and 4 Deluxe is that the 4 Deluxe has a F-N-R shift and weights about another 13 lbs.

I have a '91 Deluxe. Its good for trolling, smooth and quiet at idle. With me and a 6 gallon tank it can just barely manage to get my 12' aluminum boat up on plane in calm water.
