Hi all,

Just ordered a manual for the above motor,in the meantime I would like to run it this weekend, please can you confirm that a fuel/oil ratio of 20 : 1 should suffice ??
Also whilst it was in the garage I moved it for some reason and had what I suspect was a small pool of gear oil which appears to have leaked out of the bottom of the leg..?
Any ideas please!!

Re: Johnson 35hp fuel mixture

The fuel mix is 50:1 91 RON rated petrol to TC-W3 rated outboard oil. That's 20ml of oil per litre of petrol.

If it's been a very long time since the engine's been run, I usually start it with a bit of a heavier mix but never more than double. I run this way for about an hour.

Does the pool of 'gear oil' smell like petrol? Is it black? If so, that's mearly unburnt fuel/oil dripping from the exhaust and a very common thing to see on an engine.

Sounds like you haven't had this motor very long. If you have when was the last time you ran it. If it has been sitting very long ( a year or two) you will probably want to change the impeller and put a carb kit in it. If you are worried about the oil then drain a little bit from your lower unit. If it is milky or clear then you have a leak in it and I would repair it before you go out. Like Paul said if it is black and smells like petrol you are okay. Does your telltale pump water if you run it in a trash can? If it does not then I would not venture out until I replaced the water pump.

I'm assuming this is his 1983 35hp he's talking about. Graham, please in the future mention the hp and year or model number of the outboard.

Hi again,
Apologies for forgetting the HP and year ! Yes it is the 1983 35hp.Many thanks for all your replies and assistance,I have never had this engine out on the water as I have been fitting it out over the winter, yesterday I fitted the motor again and it started second turn,(super..or so I thought)I now have a few problems...1.The motor will not turn off with the key?? (I had to disconnect the fuel line and choke it) 2.I ran the motor in a trash can (or dustbin!) and there was no tell tale hence my panic when I couldnt turn it off!
I have had the motor since september 2004 and that was the last time I ran it in a bucket before yesterday, that is. My main concern is the lack of a tell tale, from reading the forums I need to change the impeller,is this a straightforward task covered in the manual? (when I get it).
Oh yes one more thing, when fireman57 refers to changing the water pump - is that the same as the impeller? - only the water pump sounds expensive!
The oil which I think leaked from the leg smelt only like clean oil and looked like clean oil too.
Thanking you all in anticipation...Graham
