Hello again to all.

Cooling System question for '76 35hp Johnson:

Should I have a "pee hole" on this outboard or does it discharge the water elsewhere? The only sign of water coming from the housing that I see is from a slot just above the water line. I have steam and some larger drops of water coming out of it but nothing consistent that really proves to me that I am getting good water flow through the system. Last year I removed the water jacket from the head and found chunks of rubber (impeller) lodged in two places. I thought I had it all cleared up but the lack of steady water from the motor makes me very paranoid about overheating. Anyone familiar with this motor?

Thanks,
John

I'm assuming you changed the impeller after that. If it had a pee hole, which it doesn't, there would be a fitting on the exhaust cover with a hose routed to lower pan. I think it was '78-up that have them. Water spray coming out of exhaust ports on the midsection indicates waterpump is working. Has it run hot? When thermostat opens up the waterspray should increase a tad.

In 1976, some of the 35's had overboard indicators and some didn't. I don't know the difference. Your 1976 may have overboard indicator. If it does, it's located behind the gearshift on the engine pan. There is a hose that runs from it, around the engine, and connects to a fitting on the exhaust housing on the port side. Last summer mine was clogged by dirt deposited by insects.

YOU ALSO MAY WANT TO REMOVE YOUR THERMOSTAT AND LOOK THERE YOU MAY FIND PIECES OF RUBBER THERE TO THAT CAN BLOCK WATER FLOW AND CAUSE OVERHEAT.
