HI. I have a 1981 Johnson 35hp (J35ECIG) with a bad clutch dog. I have opportunity to purchase a 1978 -35EL78R. Part numbers all appear to be the same. Difference is the 78 is a long shaft and our 81 is a short shaft. Can I take the lower off the 35EL78R and will bolt to my J35ECIG? Thank you

Yes----Driveshaft just slides out and the short will slide in.-----I would take that 78 lower unit apart and inspect / reseal it before installing it.----Unless the seller offers a warranty.

I Highly doubt you are going to get a Gear Case from a 78 35 hp to work on an 81 35hp. Shift Linkages are Different. The 78 disconnects up in the Exhaust Housing, while the 81 disconnects in the Gear Housing, between the Water Inlet Screens
