Johnson started with the RX motors, RX-10C in 63 I think. They were 28 hp motors. My model number book stops around 65, so I'm just guessing that your motor is an RXEL-15...probably 67 or 68. At some point, they bumped these 28 hp motors to 33 hp. It runs on a 50:1 fuel/oil mix.

Your motor is an RXEL-15, not 155. That makes it a 1967 model. The last character is probably an "S," not a "5."

Re: johnson 33hp super sea-horse

The good news, is that your motor is a derivative of a series of motors that OMC made over a long period of time. Because of this, there are still plenty of parts available for it. Its also a very solid motor and will last "forever," if you take care of it.

I recommend that you surf EBay for a factory service manual and then read it, cover to cover, a couple of times. You can also surf the threads here at iboats, by using the search function to find threads about Johnson or Evinrude 33hp motors. By doing these things, you'll learn a lot about your motor and will have a great frame of reference for keeping it in good health.

Those old 28's and 33's were based on the old 30's and 35's of '56 and '57. If you look at the head, you'll see the mountings for the compression relief levers are still present. I believe that the 33 is still the 40.5 cube block, just like the '57 35hp and the 28hp is the 35.7 cube block like the '56 25hp. They more or less just continued the models from the late 50's and changed the shrouding. The motors are still pretty much the same. I own a 1962 Evinrude 28hp Speeditwin, myself. It's a hell of a nice running motor and starts on the first or second pull. Good luck with it, I think it will serve you well.
