Johnson 30HP problem

I have a 30hp johnson motor, mounted on a 13 foot Boston Whaler. The engine is in great shape.I haven't run the engine in approximately 10 months and I decided to take it out this passed weekend. The gas level was at 1/2 tank full so I topped it off with new gas mixed with the proper amount of oil. When I put it in the water it ran long enough to get me out in open water about 300 feet from land and then it stalled. I was able to get it back to the dock and then I went to a marine store and purchased a water separator, filter and dri fuel. after adding all these new parts the engine would start and then make a spew sound just before it would turn off. I got it home and drained the fuel, mixed new fuel, disconnected the house from the fuel tank and used the new fuel to run through the fuel line. The engine continued to function the same way so I took the cover off the engine and turned a red valve, which I think is called the primer solenoid. I could here the fuel run through something, it may have been the carburter. I then started the engine and it ran for a few minutes and then shut off :( . This time I notice oil running down around the propeller. I don't understand what has gone wrong. Can someone help me?

You've probably still got bad fuel in the carb bowls.

Re: Johnson 30HP problem

Oil around the prop is normal and is usually due to unburned fuel which contains oil. I agree with Walker about the carbs. You may end up having to rebuild the carbs. Once crud gets in there sometimes that is the only way to clean it out.

Well, I guess I have no choice then to have the carburtor rebuilt. Do you know of any good machanics in Miami or broward? :)

Does anyone know if there is a cleaner on the market that will clean the carburator on my Johnson 30 HP motor without having to rebuild the carburator?

mlcatlopez
They will need to be disassembled to clean them. Spraying them or adding cleaner to the fuel tank will not do it. I would get a manual and try it yourself. It's not that hard and if you take your time you will do just fine, plus save lots of money. Rebuild kits can be ordered online.
Would need the year and/or model number to suggest where to get parts.

By the way, I picked up new Spark plugs, spark plug wires and carburator cleaner today. Would I need special tools to rebuild the carburator? I'll wait for your reply

Re: Johnson 30HP problem

An air compressor with a blower nozzle is a necessity if you want to do a first rate job cleaning the carbs.

That sounds like a good idea but I don't have an air compressor. What else can I use?

Re: Johnson 30HP problem

I always strip down carbs and soak them over night in carb cleaner. ( about $15.oo a one gal. container that comes with mesh insert for parts soaking. Found at any auto parts place like Discount auto, Auto Zone, etc.). Then, as stated by the other gentleman, blow all passages out with air.
Generally, with a little care, gaskits seperate in tack and can be reused.
Never soak gaskets as the will swell and break down. That includes float and plastic parts.
Remember, there are a lot of small passages that need to be cleaned out and a tool that works well is a welding tip cleaner which is a set of different sized spring steel coragated wires avalible at any welding supply company for around $7.oo

Take your time in dis assymbly to study the carb and you will see how simple yet simply amazing this little device is..

Good luck and never let gas stand in your engine for prolong periods.

My 25 HP Merc that was missing at power was caused by a bad STATOR. I just got my boat back today. GOOD LUCK
