I have a '93 Johnson 30. It looks like the bolt that holds the electric starter to the block is stripped. The starter works, but it will not stay in position to turn the flywheel. I replaced the bolt, but 2 days later I had the same problem. Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas on the best way to fix without replacing the block?

Re: Johnson 30 Electic Starter bolt

Hi, Rbalaka. Sounds like it is the hole in the block, not the bolt, that is stripped. If this is correct, there are three things you can do:

1. Drill out the hole in the block and rethread it for a larger bolt. This would only work if the larger bolt will fit through the starter.

2. Drill, as above, but fit a helicoil type insert to provide new, steel threads for the bolt.

3. Drill and tap for a larger, mild steel stud. Install the stud flush with the block. Then drill and tap it for the starter bolt.

Over many years of dealing with stripped threads in soft alloy castings and forgings I have tried all three methods. The first is the simplest if the larger bolt will fit. The third is the most effective and permanent, but the most work.

Red sky at night. . . .
JB

helicoil it and use a long stud with a nut that way you dont have to remove the stud to replace the the starter
