Well just and update to my excessively smoking 1994 johnson 200hp on a past thread. Well i rebuilt the vro which did have a cut diaphram but no help on the smoking. Next i dissconnected the VRO. Smoke is a but better but still excessive. Note: all cylinders at 95psi on compression check. One plug looks a little cleaner than the rest. Should i assume a possible blown head gasket? Any other advice?
thanks, joe

Hey Joe, you might want to just continue at the end of your original post, makes it harder to follow when you start a new post for an old topic, as nobody can see any previous things you wrote.

Re: Johnson 200hp smoking part 2

I put about 20 hours on the motor after VRO rebuild. I used double oil to verify VRO was operating properly and it was. After using up double oil and putting back in fresh gas, motor was still smoking bad. Now it is white smoke only.
I pulled the port side head today. There is very large buildup of salt all over the head and gasket maybe leading to the water inrusion in the bottom cylinder. New problem: 3 head bolts snapped when removing head. Only good news is about 5/16 of stud is left sticking out. I soaked them with some penetrating oil and will try to get a vice grip on them tomorrow.

Heat the area where the bolt reminents are with a propane torch, or better yet a torch fed with MAPP gas. Get the area good and hot. Then try winding the bolts out with the vice grips.

In salt water, 9 times out of 10 penetrating oil is just wishful thinking. The bit left sticking out is a real help.
